Greetings from 'down-under'.

NEWS FLASH:-

Cunard’s new Queen Elizabeth will be inaugurated 11th October 2010

Britain’s Cunard Line has confirmed that Queen Elizabeth will name her new namesake, the third Cunard ship to bear the name, at a ceremony to take place in Southampton on October 11, 2010. The naming will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be a major event of worldwide interest.
Cunard President and Managing Director Peter Shanks commented: “The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word. The Queen launched Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1967 and named our current flagship, the Queen Mary 2, in 2004. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner Queen Elizabeth.”
The Queen was also present at the age of 12 at the launch of the first Queen Elizabeth on September 27, 1938, when she accompanied her mother, Queen Elizabeth, to Clydebank for the launch along with her sister Princess Margaret.
The ship will set sail on her maiden voyage the day after the naming ceremony.
The Cunard line has a tradition of its major ships being named by British royalty.

SOLAR ACTIVITY - CYCLE # 24

C2.5 Flare - A C2.5 Solar flare took place at 14:59 UTC Monday around Sunspot 1105. There will remain the possibility of B-Class flares and perhaps another C-Class flare.
Solar Update - Sunspot 1101 is about to rotate onto the western limb and will soon be out of direct earth view. A CME took place on Saturday, but was a limb event. This will have no impact on earth.
Geophysical Activity Summary: 04/2100Z to 05/2100Z: - The geomagnetic field was quiet. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the period.
Geophysical Activity Forecast: - The geomagnetic field is forecast to range from quiet to active conditions for days 1-2 (06-07 September). Conditions are forecast to return to quiet conditions on day 3 (08 September).

CARRINGTON FLARE of 1859

Considerable debate is circulating around the current Solar Cycle # 24 and the strong possibility of a 'super flare' within the 2011-2013 period. You may like to check out the attached NASA site relating to an event which was observed in England by Richard Carrington [ A highly regarded British radio astronomer] on September 1st. 1859.
The effects that occured then and strong possibility of re-occuring in our time are of considerable interest. It is this effect that many "Ex Marine Radio Officers/Operators" prior to the introduction of the GMDSS [Global Maritime Distress Safety System], and the demise of specialised shipbourne staff who said the retention of HF radio staff should be maintained - myself included.
Check the NASA site - in green - and then ponder how our current system with all its 'eggs in one basket' is shortly to fail miserably. This is based on FACT - and marvel at the designer of our universe.! - Carrington Flare. If you check the "History" sub-section on this website - note my comments under the heading Portisheadradio GKA.

LAURA DEKKER onboard her yacht "GUPPY"

Laura and "Guppy" - departed Gibraltar 21st August 2010 and is currently [03SEPT.2010] at the Canary Isles, having rectified the rudder/self-steering systems. Father has joined her and she will again sail solo to next leg at a date/time as yet to be decided. For up-to-date data check her 'blog' as my Dutch is limited - she is enjoying the beautiful weather.
Laura is attempting to become the 'youngest' solo navigator in a "round-the-world" quest which has attracted a fair percentage of negative comment akin to the 'trials' Jessica Watson attracted prior to her departure last year on "Pink Lady".
For a comprehensive overview of Laura, her boat, preparation, position etc. click onto her official webpage, in green - Laura Dekker and "Guppy".

BLUEBELL RAILWAY - 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The opening of East Grinstead [Bluebell] station platform this past weekend (4th and 5th September 2010) was a great occasion. Tremendous work behind the scenes has been accomplished plus all the other unsung heroes who have been working in the background deserve commendation. Looking forward to that 'tip' removal exercise re-commencing and seeing periodic through trains from London and elsewhere surfacing - should be a promoters dream too coupled with the build-up of the local economic structure - eg hotels, motels, day-trippers etc. - at least too the railway now becomes beacon for other systems to grasp the opportunity and literally branch out. Reminds me of the old Yorkshire adage "If t'hay wants to get it done lad, do it fer da sen": Nothing comes to those who sit and wait. Congratulations all!

Have retained a link so you can follow the Extensions progress and future developments - [updated 04SEPTEMBER.2010] - click on the Green section - Bluebell Railway Extension - If you get the opportunity to visit this preserved railway, enjoy the experience and have a pint for me at the "Bessemer Arms" Hotel at Sheffield Park.

For first pictures along with several embedded video clips , refer to the attached link. East Grinstead is open 04SEPTEMBER.2010 - just in from UK. Enjoy

"Railway World TV"

As many of you know, along with Amateur Radio another of my hobbies and pursuits are steam railways. Personally I enjoy, UK stuff BUT, check out the attached link to Railway World founded by Mark Found. This embraces all aspects of railways - world wide [Australia, Germany, NZ, Poland, UK, USA, China etc.,] including model and minature plus live steam on 5", 7-1/4" gauge stuff - again world wide coverage.
On 06SEPTEMBER.2010 RWTV # 10/37 [Railway World TV package # 10/37] arrived on the E-mail desk - Thanks Zoe 7989. If YOU would like to receive these Bulletins regularly, click on the link in 'green' and tell Mark and Zoe that Jonboyradio sent you and/or where you found the link - it's FREE too. Railway World TV. and enjoy the trip.

"Planes TV"

Aviation is yet another of my hobbies. When living at Salisbury [UK], we often saw test flights of some great machines, some long gone too, most noteably the TSR2 which I always thought was one of the most advanced machines of its time. Sadly everything associated with it was 'destroyed' by a rear facing government of that time.
On the 02SEPTEMBER.2010 received the latest links from "Planes TV" of the Eastbourne and Lowestoft Sea Air Festival 2010' - Classic Vulcan shots in the Lowestoft clip - wow - If you would like to view this and other aircraft check with Iain Campbell of Planes TV via the attached link in 'green' and tell Iain and crew that Jonboyradio sent you and/or where you found the link - it's FREE too - Planes TV. Their DVDs are also available in English, Dutch, German, Russian etc.
